Buying a used Ford Fiesta
The Fiesta was Britain’s best-selling car for years, which is why there are so many good used examples to choose from. Ford stopped building it in 2023, so every Fiesta is now a used buy. Most of the cars we see are the seventh generation (2008–2017) and the eighth generation (2017–2023).
What to check
- The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol has a cambelt that runs in engine oil. Look for a service history showing oil changes on time with the oil Ford specifies, and ask whether the belt has been changed if the car is near Ford’s replacement interval.
- Older automatics use a dual-clutch “Powershift” gearbox. On the test drive it should pull away smoothly without juddering.
- Smaller engines such as the 1.1, 1.25 and 1.0 sit in low insurance groups, which is why the Fiesta is a popular first car — get a quote on the exact car before you buy.

Often, yes. It is easy to drive and park, parts are widely available, and the smaller engines sit in low insurance groups. Premiums still vary a lot by driver and postcode, so get a quote on the exact car first.
Which Fiesta generation should I look for?
The 2017-on model is roomier and more refined inside and has more modern safety and connectivity kit; the 2008–2017 car is cheaper to buy. Both are well proven.
