Used car viewing and test drive checklist

Taking twenty minutes to look over a car properly is time well spent, whoever you are buying from. Here is a checklist you can use on any viewing.

Before you go

• Read the full advert and look through every photo
• Check the MOT history on GOV.UK using the registration shown in the advert
• Get an insurance quote so there are no surprises
• Call to confirm the car is still available
• Bring your driving licence if you want a test drive

Paperwork

• Does the V5C logbook match the car's registration and VIN?
• Is there a service history, and does the mileage progress sensibly?
• Ask what preparation has been done and what warranty applies

Walk around the car

• Look along the panels in good light for ripples or colour differences
• Check panel gaps are even
• Look at all four tyres, including the inner edges, and check the tread
• Check lights, wipers and the windscreen for chips

Inside

• Do all warning lights come on with the ignition, then go out once started?
• Try the air conditioning, heater, windows, central locking and infotainment
• Check seat belts and adjust the seats
• If you have child seats, bring them and check they fit

On the test drive

• Start from cold if you can
• Listen for knocks over bumps and any whining or grinding
• Check the car pulls straight and brakes evenly
• Try the gears — changes should be smooth, manual or automatic
• Include a faster road if possible, not just a lap of the block
