Choosing a used family car: SUV, estate or MPV?

The right family car depends on how many people you carry, what goes in the boot and how far you drive. Here is how the three most popular types compare.

SUVs and crossovers

The higher seating position makes it easier to lift children in and out, and many drivers like the view of the road. Boot space varies more than you might expect — some compact crossovers have smaller boots than a family hatchback. Larger SUVs can cost more to run.

Estates

An estate usually gives you the most boot space for the money, with a long flat load area that suits pushchairs, dogs and flat-pack furniture. They tend to be efficient on longer journeys and drive much like a normal hatchback or saloon.

MPVs

MPVs put practicality first: tall roofs, big door openings and flexible seating, sometimes with seven seats. They are less fashionable than SUVs, which can make them good value on the used market.

Things to check on any family car

• ISOFIX points — where they are and how many
• Whether three child seats fit across the back if you need that
• Boot space with the seats up, not just folded
• Rear door opening width
• Insurance group and road tax
