Buying a used Volkswagen Golf
The Golf is the benchmark family hatchback — solid, refined and well built. Most used examples are the Mk7 (2012–2020) and the Mk8 (from 2020), which relies more heavily on touchscreens for its controls.
What to check
- Automatics use a DSG dual-clutch gearbox. Ask whether it has been serviced to Volkswagen’s schedule, and make sure it pulls away smoothly.
- Check the service history, whether it is stamped book or Volkswagen’s digital record.
- On a Mk8, try the touchscreen and touch-sensitive controls before you commit — some drivers prefer the Mk7’s buttons.
